My specialist subject is Biology (up to Undergraduate level), and I also teach Chemistry, Biochemistry (A-level/IB HL), English (KS3) and French (KS3), as well as Interview and University application technique.
I have worked in the field of Widening Participation and Outreach since my first year at university, and am experienced at planning and teaching a wide range of theory and laboratory-based activities. I have mentored GCSE and A-level students in Biology for the past three years, as well as providing one-to-one and small group tuition both privately and for educational charities in a range of subjects.
Science is fascinating and exciting and I am constantly looking to build on my current knowledge and investigate new discoveries! I enjoy learning and am enthusiastic about taking on new challenges and broadening my horizons. I have an optimistic attitude and believe that any problem can be resolved, even if at first this seems impossible!
I have a strong knowledge of the various exam boards and syllabuses offered at GCSE and A-level. In particular, I have taught students across the following:
GCSE: Edexcel IGCSE (triple and double award), Edexcel GCSE, Edexcel Certificate, OCR 21st Century Science, OCR Additional Applied Science, AQA
A-level: AQA, OCR, Edexcel, WJEC
Oct 2011 – June 2014 Imperial College London, BSc (Hons) Biology, First Class
2000 – 2011 Dame Alice Harpur School, A levels: Biology (A*) Chemistry (A*) French (A), AS-level: Maths (B)
GCSE: Maths (A*), Additional Maths (A*), English (A*), English Literature (A*), Biology (A*), Chemistry (A*), Physics (A*), History (A*), French (A*), Spanish (A*)
GCSE Biology and Chemistry (AQA): weekly tutoring in each subject to help Richard revise for his upcoming GCSE exams. Emphasis on improving use of scientific terminology, revision support and helping Richard to stay focussed and motivated, in order to aim for high grades.
IB HL Chemistry: weekly Chemistry tutoring to help Alix stay on top of the theory learnt at school, support her during revision for class tests and exams, and help her to work towards high exam marks in preparation for applying to American universities.
GCSE Biology and Chemistry (OCR 21st Century): tuition is focussed on improving Mia’s exam and revision technique, as well as providing structured theory revision sessions for both subjects with regular assessment of knowledge through exam-style questions.
AS Biology (OCR): tuition to help Marisa apply her strong factual knowledge in exam questions. The tuition sessions are aimed at improving specificity and detail in written exam answers, with emphasis on revision and repetition of key concepts.
IB SL Chemistry: 1:1 tuition focussed on improving Louis’ exam technique and helping him to gain a comprehensive and very detailed understanding of the syllabus, in order to achieve high grades in his exams this May.
IB HL Chemistry: Manon is currently in her first year of the IB. 1:1 tuition is focussed on reinforcing and revising key concepts studied at school and practising the application of theoretical knowledge.
A-level Biology (WJEC): Amy is in Year 13 and is currently studying for her final A-level exams. I provide one-to-one support to her in the topics she finds most difficult, as well as practising exam technique for long answer questions.
KS2 English: I was a volunteer tutor at a project for an educational charity, where I tutored several pupils in KS2 English grammar. By the end of the project the confidence of all pupils had increased and they were more comfortable using complex grammatical structures.
A-level Biology (AQA, OCR, Edexcel): I am currently teaching and supporting a group of students over the course of this year, to complement their science education in school. I teach a specific topic every 3-4 weeks, as well as carrying out practical activities.
GCSE Chemistry: I tutored Georgie in the run-up to her Year 11 Chemistry GCSE, and our tutoring sessions were conducted online over Skype.
