Online summer course for year 5 & 6 : Creative Learning

The creative learning workshop is led by Amy, who has cultivated a uniquely holistic approach to teaching and prides herself on going above and beyond the standard syllabus. Amy has designed a workshop that looks at creative learning through the angle of critical thinking. She will get the children to put on their critical thinking hats and start digesting, debating, and presenting their thoughts on different scenarios. The workshop will start by looking at the difference between architecture and sculpture via a series of examples. This is designed to spark discussion before then introducing the systems thinking approach, where answers are never singular but connected. The workshop will finish by looking at how Picasso’s life has impacted his art. Students will have to answer the question ‘Is it possible to separate Art from the Artist?’ using the persuasive devices glossary they will have been provided with.

Xanthi, published author, leads the Creative Writing workshop. Alongside  writing, Xanthi has led many creative writing workshops throughout her teaching career. As a writer herself, Xanthi has a knack for conveying complex and creative ideas in a fluid and easy-to-understand manner. The workshop will begin with a brief meditation and visualisation exercise to encourage imagination and creativity, helping to clear the mind and create a blank space ready to be explored. Using existing poems, Xanthi will engage the class in an informal discussion to interpret language as a creative tool within the poem. Moving away from more structured learning and restrictive boundaries, Xanthi will use visual prompts and scenarios to ask the students to create their own poems. Students will be encouraged to share their work aloud with the class, in pairs, or by handing the piece in – for those shyer students.
