  The Public Speaking course is led by George, an English and Drama tutor and professional actor with fourteen years’ experience. The course aims to help students who are faced with speaking public feel excited not nervous, confident not fearful, and focused not lost. Key modules will include: understanding what your audience want and how you can serve them; analysing posture, eye contact and physical confidence; and mastering vocal delivery.

  The Critical Thinking workshop is led by Christian, who has been an IB teacher for 20 years. He currently works for an IB school where he is head of Global Politics and Theory of Knowledge (TOK). He is the author of several textbooks for Pearson Publishing. The course will encourage students to reflect on the central question, ‘How do we know that?’. It will inculcate habits of healthy scepticism and scrutiny of claimed knowledge, and will urge students to reflect on and examine the way their own beliefs and perspectives may impact on what they think they know.

  Online courses: Reading and Creative Writing

  Rebecca Stonehill is a published fiction author of four books, based in the UK. She has been teaching creative writing to young people for over ten years, empowering them to get excited about the written word and produce work they can be proud of.

  There are two courses, aimed at children aged between 9 and 16. The inspiration and creative writing activities for these courses will be taken from two exciting books.

  Younger students (aged 9 to 12) will read the first book from ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ – The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket and for older students the focus will be on The book Thief by Markus Zusak.

  

   

   

   

   

   

   

  The Bad Beginning is a fantastic, mischievous novel about three orphaned children and a ruthless ‘relatve’ intent on stealing their fortune. The Book Thief is a thrilling story about a young girl in Nazi Germany who steals books to save them from being burnt.

   

  I will divide each book into ten weeks, giving the students a task of reading a certain amount between classes. (NB If they are unable to read the set chapters it is OK but it goes without saying they will get more out of the class and it will be more fulfilling if they read the full amount.)

  Please note that very limited reading will take place in the class itself – during our hour together we will focus on fun writing activities. These will be based around (but not limited to) the following: character, setting, plot, conflict, multiple perspectives, imagining oneself in the story, poetic interpretation.

  Skills students will be working on:

  • Creativity
  • Composition and structuring of short stories and poems
  • Increasing vocabulary
  • Literary devices to help bring writing alive eg simile, metaphor
  • Confidence with the written word

  The classes will all take place on Zoom.

  What students will need to bring to the class: the book, enthusiasm and imagination!

• Creative Writing Competition Details

  Alex is a highly experienced tutor, published author and professional actor. He runs several Creative Writing Courses, regularly preparing students to enter various competitions.

  Most recently the group worked towards the Solstice Prize. This competition required students to write a short story focusing on nature. Alex is quick to say that the aim of the course is not to win the competition but to instil a love for creative writing and develop key skills such as the implementation of language and structural devices, along with the importance of planning and editing.

  Vishal is a highly experienced tutor who specialises in preparing students for the 11 Plus entrance examinations to top grammar and independent schools in the country. His recent students have been awarded places at the following schools to name just a few: St Paul’s, Westminster, King’s College School, City of London, North London Collegiate School and Hamptons.

  Vishal ensures that lessons are fun, engaging and, most importantly, they cover the topics that children need to know before the exams. He has a calm and engaging manner and believes in teaching through kindness, patience and a step-by-step approach. He views confidence as one of the most important aspects; building knowledge and confidence simultaneously to ensure success.

  Vishal has previously taught last-minute classes for students in their first term of Year 6 as well as working with Year 5 students on a regular basis.

  Gaining a place at Oxford or Cambridge is highly competitive, requiring not only academic excellence but also a deep intellectual curiosity and strong critical thinking skills. This course prepares you for your interview through a series of mock interviews and detailed feedback sessions, all lead by a specialist tutor such as Alex. Alex holds two first class degrees in Mathematics from the University of Oxford and has helped numerous students secure a place at both Oxford and Cambridge.
