Mentoring and executive function support for IB student

Problem

Our client, a high-profile Greek artist, faced a significant challenge: their daughter, suffering from acute anxiety, was frequently missing school and falling behind in her International Baccalaureate. The girl’s anxiety stemmed from a combination of minor traumatic experiences related to school, which together had a profound impact on her well-being and academic performance. The family sought an educational solution that could address her unique needs, and that would help her to regain confidence and re-engage with her

SLT’s Approach

Recognising the complexity of the situation, we employed a holistic approach to support the student. Understanding that traditional tutoring methods might not be effective, we introduced an elite tutor and mentor who not only provided academic support but also acted as coach and role model. The tutors worked closely with the girl’s mother, psychiatrist, and counsellor to develop a personalised tutoring programme tailored to the student’s needs.

To create a nurturing and flexible learning environment, the mentor incorporated practical learning aids such as Executive Functioning, time management and pathway planning to help make school work less daunting. This bespoke education strategy helped the student understand concepts without frustration, making learning more engaging and less stressful. The tutors were prepared for days when the student was not ready to study, giving her the space to work around her anxiety and gradually build trust and resilience.

Results

The personalised and empathetic approach of the tutors led to remarkable results. The student’s confidence grew, and she began attending school more regularly. The practical help, combined with personalised tutoring helped her improve her Executive Functioning significantly. This allowed her to catch up on her coursework, which she eventually completed successfully. Following this achievement, SLT supported the student’s move to a liberal and forward thinking Sixth Form college in London, where she thrived while studying Art.

Conclusion

This case study illustrates the transformative power of carefully selected tutors who provide not just academic support but also emotional and psychological guidance. By integrating mentoring and tutoring, SLT helped a student overcome significant barriers, leading to academic success and personal growth. This approach showcases the benefits of bespoke education and the importance of addressing the holistic needs of students, ensuring they reach their full potential.

  • Can we provide a programme like this for your family?

Yes. Most of our programmes begin with a thoughtful discussion about what you need right now, what you want to achieve long term, and what success looks like for your child. We then propose a structure, a timetable, an estimated budget and realistic outcomes - and we refine it with you before anything begins.

  • How do we start gently when a child feels overwhelmed?

We begin with a pace the student can tolerate. Often that means starting with one or two sessions a week in familiar or preferred subjects, with tutors chosen for warmth, calm authority and emotional intelligence. As confidence and trust develop, we build the timetable gradually and introduce greater academic demand.

  • Can we work alongside therapists, counsellors or medical teams?

Yes. The strongest programmes are often multi-disciplinary. With consent, we collaborate with clinicians and therapists so that academic planning reflects the child’s emotional and physical reality. We also recommend additional support if tutors observe that a child might need it.

  • Can we coordinate specialist input (OT, Education Psychologist Reports etc.)?

Yes. We frequently work alongside existing professionals and incorporate recommendations into teaching plans. Where useful, we can also recommend additional specialists - for example occupational therapists, SPLD specialists, or educational psychologists - and help ensure everyone is working cohesively rather than in silos.

  • What education systems can we provide tuition for?

Tutors are proficient in a wide range of educational systems and curricula, including the British, American, IB, and other international programmes. We tailor our tutoring to align with your child's specific educational needs and goals.

  • Can we support exam entries if a child is not enrolled in a school?

Yes. Where students are fully home schooled, we manage exam board registration, access arrangements (where applicable), and exam centre coordination. This ensures that academic outcomes remain secure and formally recognised, even when education is delivered outside a traditional school setting.
