A fully tailored year of education on a yacht in the Med
Background
A family took a year to explore the Mediterranean aboard a 39m yacht. Two boys (10/11) required full-time education; the younger had ADHD, moderate ASD and dysgraphia and needed significant differentiation and additional time on tasks.
SLT’s Approach
A tailored curriculum was built in collaboration with family and crew, integrating the itinerary with immersive learning (art, culture, marine biology). The boys were taught separately where appropriate, with a daily schedule balancing reading, physical activity and mindfulness. Progress was tracked through formal reporting; teaching drew on online platforms where needed and aligned with school expectations. Beyond academics, the programme supported resilience, teamwork and social skills through structured lessons and everyday interactions.
Results
Academic continuity was maintained, learning was broadened beyond the curriculum, and stable routines were preserved across a complex year – enabling a confident onward transition.
How much does a home schooling programme cost?
Fees are based on the number of subjects, the intensity of the timetable, and the type of provision required (UK-based, hybrid, or residential). Our programmes are designed around outcomes and complexity, not hours alone. Indicative ranges for London-based programmes typically sit between £10,000 and £30,000 per term. Full-time residential tutoring can rise to circa £350,000 per year depending on scope, travel and exclusivity. We will always outline a proposed budget in advance with clear rationale.
Can we provide a programme like this for your family?
Yes. Most of our programmes begin with a thoughtful discussion about what you need right now, what you want to achieve long term, and what success looks like for your child. We then propose a structure, a timetable, an estimated budget and realistic outcomes - and we refine it with you before anything begins.
How do we select tutors to work on yachts?
Yacht placements are complex and require considerably more than academic excellence. We select tutors who are professionally trained, calm under pressure, socially adept, and able to work respectfully within a household and crew structure. They must understand boundaries, confidentiality and safeguarding, and they must be capable of building a rigorous curriculum that can be adaptable to constantly changing itineraries caused by weather patterns.
How do we keep learning consistent during frequent travel?
We protect consistency through careful planning. Tutors map the curriculum in advance, maintain a predictable rhythm of sessions, and build in flexibility for travel changes. When plans shift, we adjust the timetable without losing momentum.
Can we combine cultural experiences with curriculum objectives?
Absolutely. Home schooling is uniquely well suited to “real-world” learning. Theatre, galleries, historic sites and local culture can be integrated into English, history, geography, languages and even science — making learning more memorable and often more enjoyable, without sacrificing rigour.
How do we measure progress and report back?
Progress is monitored continuously rather than retrospectively. Families receive regular written reports outlining academic development, engagement, confidence and any emerging concerns. For longer or more complex programmes, we also track trends over time, allowing us to refine the programme proactively rather than waiting for issues to arise.
How do we protect privacy and confidentiality?
Discretion is central to how we work. All tutors and staff operate under strict confidentiality agreements, and we are highly experienced in supporting families who require absolute privacy. Information is shared only on a need-to-know basis, and we are accustomed to working within complex family, security and household structures.
