Service: Special Educational Need, Home Schooling, Mentoring and Wellbeing

Age Range: From 5 to 11, From 12 to 18

    Background

After several unsuccessful attempts at enrolling in state, independent and specialist schools, the family needed GCSE tutors for their son. At the time of engagement their son was regularly running away from school and home and did not engage in any learning.

    Results

Creating a specific strategy with the family and their local authority (the student had an EHCP plan), we introduced specialist tutors for core academic subjects and wellbeing. The student had a rage of special educational needs and social and emotional difficulties. Tutors began with activities that benefitted attainment in key areas without overtly appearing (to the student) to be preparing for GCSE’s. The student met weekly with his wellbeing tutor, including lessons on cooking for nutrition, trips to museums and preparing him for engaging in decisions about his future. We organised mock exams, attended meetings with his local authority to secure further funding for his tuition and with transitioning into college. The student successfully completed his GCSE’s and went on to attend an agricultural college.
